Prevent Stroke With Plenty Of Fiber

Dear Reader,

Strokes are dangerous... devastating and sometimes deadly. Preventing them is a key goal of medicine and of special interest if you have risk factors for stroke. A new British study that involved over 20 years of research finds that eating more fiber filled foods might lower the risk of having a stroke. In fact, for every 7-gram increase in daily fiber intake, a person's risk for having a first stroke goes down 7% the researchers concluded.

The research involved examining the results of eight earlier works conducted in the U.S., Japan, Europe and Australia that were published between 1990 and 2012. Overall the team saw that the more total dietary fiber eaten by the subjects, the lower the risk of having a first stroke. The analysis also looked at the benefit of fiber from food vs. from supplements, but can't say if supplements provide the same benefit as getting fiber from natural food sources. Unfortunately, the team wasn't able to figure out which fiber rich foods offer the most benefit. More work would be necessary to develop a stroke prevention list of foods.

The thing that has experts worried is that most of us aren't eating enough fiber rich foods. We need to get that intake up to 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. In the U.S., people generally get half the recommended amount. Adding just 7 grams of fiber a day to the average diet probably wouldn't be too difficult. Some whole-wheat pasta, a piece of fruit and a serving of tomatoes would do the trick. You don't need to make whole scale changes to how and what you eat to get the benefit.

Also important to understand is that fiber is a part of foods that are good for us for all kinds of reasons. It's hard to say that it's the fiber alone that's bringing the benefits. There may be other substances, as yet undiscovered, that also help out.

Prevent Stroke With Plenty Of Fiber Continued...

The finding on fiber and stroke builds on earlier work that has found consumption of plant based dietary fiber (fruits, nuts, veggies and whole grains) might curb some of the key factors that account for stroke risk. Things like high blood pressure and high "bad" (LDL) cholesterol.

A stroke can happen one of two ways. A clot can block a blood vessel to the brain or a blood vessel can bleed into the brain. Stroke and other blood vessel diseases of the brain are the world second leading cause of death, ending the lives of over 8 million people a year, leaving larger numbers with lifelong disability. That's why anything that can be done to prevent this outcome could impact many thousands of patients, especially those already at risk of stroke (smokers, obese people, those with high blood pressure).

The good news is that even a few simple changes in your fiber intake can bring many benefits. Especially if you're starting from a very low level of intake, adding just a bit can really bring you benefits. Try making healthier food choices as much as you can, moving toward a more plant based diet, adding servings of fruits and veggies and trying to make at least half your grains whole grains.

The work on fiber and stroke risk appears in the May 2013 issue of Stroke.

To your good health,
